Ah, the rebrand. Craig Lukens was taking over the family business and needed a new identity to reflect the change. He brought his needs to Apt Design: something modern, clear and very new without losing a conservative, financially-responsible appearance. We worked through the design process together and ended up with a unique, distinguishable mark that met all of his needs. The logo then carried across into all his identity pieces, including business cards, letterhead, envelopes, and a great new sign outside.

Dr. Patrick Ward is a marriage counselor in West Virginia who had a treasure trove of blog posts with great information about family, parenting, stress and relationships. What he needed was a blog site that exhibited this great content and allowed his visitors to easily find articles that would help. Dr. Ward also wanted it to be easy for clients to learn more about his office and practice. The new website has already propelled Dr. Ward’s site to the top of search engine rankings, provided a clean layout for his blog posts and archives, and brought new customers through his door.

After a few years in the dental industry and with a steady base of customers Dr. Parkhurst knew it was a good time to create a definitive mark for his business. He hired Apt Design to create a logo that would reflect the quality care his office delivers. We created an abstract smiling logo (Dr. Parkhurst didn’t want the generic giant tooth) that is rounded and friendly. The typography reflects the inviting and casual atmosphere, making this dentist’s office a little less scary.

Farmhouse Table Produce is the retail front for the Community Farm Connection, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting local farmers in North Central Washington, and to providing residents with a connection to their locally-grown, fresh produce. The organization wanted to the brand the store as fresh, bright, vibrant, and ultimately a place to get delicious fresh produce. Apt Design bridged the gap between the farmhouse and the table with a custom-illustrated, brightly-colored logo. The organization was in love at first sight.

The e3 committee is made up of many influential members of the Wenatchee Valley, all with one goal in mind – to promote North Central Washington during the 2010 Olympic Games. The Olympics will be held in Vancouver, BC and the committee was looking for a way to show visitors that NCW is a sunny recreational getaway. The idea of sun was key, and Apt developed that into a warm, strong logo that presented a fun place to escape to in any season. Through good communication and strong concepts Apt was able to give e3 a stable brand that pleased the entire committee.

The Xtreme Internship is a post-high school program allowing students to intern at a church for real-world experience. During this time they deepen their roots in their faith while expressing it in outward actions. Apt Design created a logo that communicated these aspects of the program, using modern imagery and styles that would connect with the Intership’s younger demographic. We also integrated a cross, which the eldership asked to be included to ensure the group was associated with the church.

Brand New is a website that reviews and critiques new and redesigned logos and identities. Always a good read, they are not always praising designs just because they are new or designed by a famous design firm. Recently they wrote about a logo tournament that ends with just one logo standing.

The tournament was judged by some of the biggest names in the design world. Though the reasons these logos made it into the tournament is a little unclear, the ensuing battle is spectacular. And while we wouldn’t necessarily agree with all of the decisions (we think Apple should have made it further – but we’re a little biased), the overall winner makes sense. Not only is Target’s logo brilliantly simple, their in-house design team has been winning awards (for things like this) across all media in the past few years.

Not everyone agrees with the results of the showdown; check out the comments on that post to get some other opinions. And don’t forget to tell us what you think about the fight to the death here.

The Business Journal has a good reputation in its community, but its look had remained basically the same for over a decade. The challenge on this project was to update their look while keeping the professional image of quality that the community knew already. The solution was to completely redesign the WBJ’s logo, to give their sales materials a new look, but to just slightly alter the look of the paper itself. Sections headers, pullquotes, and the body copy in the publication was freshened. In the end the readers responded well to the new cohesive look, and the Business Journal was provided with a modern identity that remained true to their past while helping them push ahead into the future.
